Royal Profile: HSH Princess Charlene Lynette of Monaco

Charlene Lynette Wittstock-Grimaldi (aka Princess Charlene Lynette of Monaco) was born in January of 1978, in in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Africa. Born a commoner to two hard working parents-her father Mike Wittstock is a salesman, her mother Lynette was a former competitive diver and swimming coach. It wasn’t long before Charlene was joined by younger brothers-Gareth in 1980 and Sean in 1983. It was in 1989 that Mike and Lynette made the big move with their family from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to Benoni, South Africa. Charlene was 11 years, Gareth 9 years and Sean was only 6 years.

Having a mother who was a former competitive diver and swimming coach turned out to be useful for Charlene, she developed a passion for swimming at a very early age. When she was six years, she told her mother that she would get into the Olympics someday. And sure enough, she did. In 1996, at 18, she won the South African Championship. In 2000, her team came in fifth at the Sydney Olympic Games. That same year, she won the gold medal for the 200m backstroke event at the “Marenostrum” international swimming meeting in Monaco. This is when she met Prince Albert for the first time; he was presiding over the international competition. In 2002, she won three gold medals at the swimming World Cup (50m and 100m crawl, 4x100m relay) and the silver medal during the Manchester Commonwealth Games (4x100m medley relay).

She attended local public schools in Benoni, first Tom Newby School and then Benoni High School. Being passionate about swimming, she left school to peruse a career and reach her Olympic goals.

She began dating Monaco’s sovereign Prince in late 2005 or early 2006, after reuniting with him at a mutual friend’s New Year’s Eve party in South Africa. She moved to Monaco in 2007, obtaining a small apartment by herself to prepare for her role as potentially the future Princess of Monaco and continue training for the Beijing Olympics (of which, later she ceased to qualify for and stopped competing all together). It was in 2008 when the rumors began-alleging that Prince Albert had popped the question and they were getting married in September. Well, September 2008 came and went, and no wedding bells rang in Monaco. Royal watchers around the world were beginning to wonder if Monaco’s “play-boy” Prince would ever settle down and produce a legitimate heir to the throne. Finally, on June 23, 2010, after the pair attended the Swedish Royal wedding, Monaco’s Palace announced that Prince Albert would marry Miss Charlene Lynette Wittstock. It was set to be the “wedding of the year”, until William decided to ask his long-time girlfriend Catherine Middleton for her hand in marriage.

Since 2007, Charlene has accompanied Prince Albert on numerous trips around the world for various occasions. In 2009, she was asked to be Ladies Lunch Monte Carlo’s honorary President by Prince Albert’s cousin Christian’s wife Cecile. In 2010, she was associated with both the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Born Free Foundation. She is a regular at Princess Stephanie’s events for FIGHT AIDS MONACO and at AMfarevents. In 2010, she took up the cause of Special Olympics of South Africa and Monaco and taking up this cause earned her title of Global Ambassador to the Special Olympics in 2011.

Royal Profile: HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover, Princess by birth of Monaco

Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi (aka HRH Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite of Hanover, Heiress presumptive of Monaco) is the eldest of three children of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and is presently first in line for the throne of Monaco after her brother, Prince Albert of Monaco. She was born on 23 January 1957 at the Princely Palace in Monte Carlo, Monaco, just nine months and 4 days after her parents got married in April 1956. From her birth to the birth of her brother she was heiress presumptive of Monaco, and again after her father’s death in April 2005 until present day, Caroline resumed her role as heiress presumptive of Monaco. She was educated at St Mary's School Ascot, and continued her studies at the University of Paris in Paris, where she received a diploma in Philosophy and minors in Psychology and Biology. She is fluent in French, English, Spanish, German and Italian.
Her first of three marriages was to Parisian banker Phillpe Junot, who was nearly eighteen years her senior and not well-received by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. The marriage took place civilly in Monaco on 28 June 1978, religiously on 29 June 1978 and divorced on 9 October 1980, without having had issue. In 1992, the Roman Catholic Church granted the princess a canonical annulment.
Her second marriage was to Italian business man Stefano Casiraghi, who is the father of her three older children on 29 December 1983. On 8 June 1984, she gave birth to their first son, Andrea Albert Pierre Casiraghi. Approximately 2 years, 1 month and 26 days later, she gave birth to the couple’s second child and only daughter, Charlotte Marie Pomeline Casiraghi. Another year, month and two days later, the couple’s second and youngest son, Pierre Rainier Stefano Casiraghi was born. Tragically, Stefano Casirahi died in a boating accident in October 1990, leaving Princess Caroline to raise their three children, who were then 6, 4, and 3 years of age at the time, alone.
She and her three children moved out of Monaco, to Saint- Rémy-de Provence, France where the children were raised as “normal” children, and attended local schools until their middle school years when their lives changed once again.
Princess Caroline married a third time, this time to Prince Ernst -August of Hanover on her 42nd birthday in 1999. Upon her marriage to Prince Ernst August, Princess Caroline and her children with Stefano moved to Fontainebleau, France, about 40 minutes outside of Paris, in order to be closer to Prince Ernst August’s two sons from his first marriage who resided in London, England with their mother at the time. Approximately six months after their marriage, their only child, Princess Alexandra Charlotte Ulrike Maryam Virginia of Hanover was born on 20 July 1999. This marriage lasted until June 2009, when Princess Caroline moved back to Monaco with the young Princess Alexandra after Prince Ernst was seen with various women who were not his wife in inappropriate situations. Prince Ernst and Princess Caroline have not been seen in public together since the Monaco leg of the Global Champions Tour in 2009.
Upon her mother’s death in 1982, Princess Caroline became first lady of Monaco de facto, as her brother was not married. She took on many responsibilities’ in Monaco surrounding her mother’s death. In 1979, Princess Caroline was appointed by her parents to become the President of the Monegasque Committee for the International Year of Children. In 1981, she founded founded the association Jeune J'Ecoute. The association has set up a 'youth hotline' where troubled youngsters can talk about their problems on the telephone with qualified people trained in dealing with all sorts of problems that are facing kids today. In 1983, she became president of the Guides de Monaco, today that is known as l'Association des Guides et Scouts de Monaco. l'Association des Guides et Scouts de Monaco is equal to the Giirl or Boy Scouts elsewhere in the world. Princess Caroline participated in l’Association des Guides et Scouts de Monaco as a youth. Her father also appointed her president of Monaco’s garden club in 1983 and President of the Organizing Committee of the Festival of Monte-Carlo Arts and later renamed the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo (Springtime Arts of Monte-Carlo) in 1984. Prince Rainier also appointed her president of the Princess Grace Foundation, which is benefited by the Rose Ball annually. In 1985, in a homage to her mother, Princess Caroline founded Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. Then on March 4, 1988 Prince Rainier III appointed Her Serene Highness by decree as the President of the Board of the "Prince-Pierre Foundation". She has also been the President of the Literary Board of the same foundation since 1988. In 1992 she was appointed the President of the Artistic Board of the Prix International d'Art Contemporain (International Contemporay Art Prize). In 1993 Princess Caroline was appointed the President of l'AMADE Mondiale (Association Mondiale des Amis de l'Enfance) or (Worldwide Association of Children's Friends), that was founded by Princess Grace in 1963 to protect children from physical and psychological abuse.
On December 2nd, 2003, UNESCO Director General Koïchiro Matsuura has appointed Her Royal Highness the Princess of Hanover as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of Her personal commitment to the protection of children and the family, and of Her contribution to the promotion of UNESCO's programs for the education of girls and women.

Op-Ed: Royals and Social Networking

Between royal duties, events, official visits and all of the other things royals do, they hardly have time to breathe or for themselves, so who would think that they personally have time to respond to the literally thousands of fan mail, e-mails, or social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter? That's right-they don't.

They employ personal assistants, secretaries, and palace staff to do it for them.

Same as any other celebrity does, however some celebrities manage to occasionally tweet or post on themselves, but not on a regular basis.

It's beyond obsudably ridiculous to believe that twitter sites such as @palaismonaco@ClarenceHouse,@QueenNoor, @QueenRania@HHShkMohd@CrownPrincessMM and @Kronprinsparet are personally maintained by the royals themselves. As stated previously- they do not have the time for such trivial things,  any royal or even celebrity watcher would know that for a fact as they are always in the media's eye. It's just not possible between trying to live "normal" lives in the public eye nor is is SAFE for them to publicly do such things-"Terrorist threat", much?

That's what I thought. It doesn't make sense for a royal to have a wide open twitter personal account for all to see. First, it's not safe-who knows what kind of weirdo fans are out there that could be tracking their every move, a potential controversey if they say something "wrong", or worse the Paparazzi!

Second, they really don't have time for it between royal funtions and trying to live normal lives-if they do have one, it is likely maintained by their personal secretary or someone on their palace staff and only used for announcing royal events and is verified by twitter. If for some reason they DO have a private account, it is more than likely blocked from view by the public for their personal safety by request of their security team, because, like I said before, you never know what kind of weirdos are out there.

Royal Profile: Antoine de Massy

Antoine de Massy is the grandson of Princess Antoinette de Massy, thus the nephew of Baroness Elisabeth-Anne de Massy, and is second cousin to Monaco's reigning Prince. He is the son of Christian-Louis de Massy and Cecile de Massy, and was born on 15 January 1997, making him fifteen years old as of 2012.

Like his grandfather, Alexandre “Aleco” Noghes, Antoine is a tennis champion with his eyes on the Summer Olympics in 2016 in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. He has been playing the sport since he was a toddler, when his father would toss him a tennis ball in their living room. When he was four years old, his father began teaching him the sport of tennis, until he was five years old. When he turned five, he began to practice with various coaches at the Monte Carlo Country Club, where he  caught the eye of Bob Brett, Boris Becker’s and Goran Ivanisevic’s world renowned coach who gave him a few lessons. In September 2008, he moved to the United States where he attended  Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, till June of 2009. He returned to Monaco that summer where he trained with  Heinz Gunthardt, that fall, he returned to the United States where he attended   Nick Saviano’s Tennis academy. That summer (2010), he returned to Monaco where he won the U-14 international tournament of Beaulieu, France.

He attended his grandmother's funeral with his parents, aunt and cousin in March {Photo}. On 29 June 2011, he was assaulted by five young adults, where his wallet and mobile phone were stolen. He was more shaken up then hurt in the incident.{Source}. A few days later, he attended  (Pictured here sitting behind Garreth Wittstock) the Royal Wedding of his father's cousin and the reigning Prince of Monaco.

At the time of her birth, her parents were not married; they subquently married in 1951, placing her and her two younger siblings in line for the throne of Monaco. She and her two siblings were originally given the surname Grimaldi, but when her mother received the Barony of Massy in 1951, as a wedding present from her brother, then Princess Antoinette changed her children's last name to de Massy. However, Elisabeth and her siblings are not entitled to use Baron or Baroness of Massy as it is not considered hereditary nor do they have the courtesy titles as the children of a baroness. Elisabeth is a baroness via her first marriage.

Elisabeth has been married twice, and has two children-one from each marriage. Her first marriage was to Baron Bernard Alexandre Taubert-Natta, producing Baron Jean-Leonard in 1974, the marriage ended in divorce. Baron Bernard died in 1989, leaving her to raise then fifteen year old Jean-Leonard on her own. In 1984, the young mother found love again, this time with a ballet dancer,  Nicolai Vladimir Costello, who she married in October of that year. However, the marriage was not long lasting, after the birth of their daughter,  Mélanie-Antoinette Costello de Massy in January 1985, the couple divorced.

She is well known for her charitable works in Monaco. Elisabeth is President of the Monegasque Tennis Federation and of the Monte Carlo Country Club. She and her daughter Melanie also appear with the family on the balcony annually at Monaco's National Day celebrations.

With the death of her uncle in 2005, she lost her place in the line of succession for the Monégasque throne, however, she, her children,  and her siblings and their families remain in the "pool" of familial collaterals eligible to be selected for the Crown in the event of the extinction of the descendants of Prince Rainier.
******
Mélanie-Antoinette Costello de Massy was born 18 January 1985 in Monaco the only daughter and child of Baroness Elisabeth-Anne de Massy and Nicolai Vladimir Costello. She grew up in Monaco, attending the International School of Monaco, earning the International Bacclaurate in 2004. Melanie is a prominate business woman in Monaco, she is presently  Agribras’ Head of Investor Relations. She is an advisor for Giersch Ventures, a financial advisory boutique, and a co-founder with Luiz Macambira of The Macmas Group, an investment advisory, real estate development and event promotion group. She sits on the Committee of the prestigious Monte-Carlo Country Club and is involved in the organization of the Monte-Carlo Masters Tennis Tournament. She is fluent in French and English, as well as speaking some German and Italian.

Royal Profile: HRH Sophie, Countess of Wessex

Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones was born on 20 January 1964 the daughter of Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones and his wife, Mary (née O'Sullivan; 1934–2005). She was the second of their children and first daughter. Sophie has an older brother, David. Sophie was named after her father's sister, Helen, who died in a riding accident more than a decade before Sophie was born. Her godfather is actor Thane Bettany who is her father's stepbrother.

In her early life, her family moved to Brenchley, Kent, where she began to attend school at the Dulwich Preparatory School, before moving on to Kent College, Pembury where she was friends with Sarah Sienesi. She then trained as a secretary at West Kent College, Tonbridge.

Sophie started working in the field of Public Relations for a varitey of firms, including four years at Capital Radio. She also worked as a ski representative in Switzerland and spent a year travelling and working in Australia. In 1996, with enough experience behind her, Rhys-Jones then launched her public relations agency, RJH Public Relations, which she ran with her business partner, Murray Harkin.

She began dating Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth, after meeting him at a tennis match in 1993. After a six year courtship, their engagement was announced by Buckingham Palace on 6 January 1999. They were wed on 19 June 1999 at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Royal guests at the wedding included the Prince's parents, two older brothers, older sister, aunt, three nephews, three nieces, The Sultan of Brunei, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, The King of Jordan, The Prince of Austrias, Prince Joachim of Denmark and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Other notable guests included people from the performing arts world in the United Kingdom. It was on this day that Prince Edward was granted the title The Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn, making his wife The Countess of Wessex and Viscountess Severn. Queen Elizabeth also declared that he would be heir to the Dukedom of Edinburgh after his brother becomes king and his father dies.

In 2001, Sophie was rushed to King Edward VII Hospital after feeling unwell, where it was discovered she was suffering from an ectopic pregnancy. Nearly two years later, she gave birth to her first child, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor on 8 November 2003 after undergoing an emergency C-Section. Her second child, James, Viscount Severn, was born on 17 December 2007 by caesarean section at the same hospital his older sister was born at four years earlier. The children, per prior agreement between the Queen and their parents, will either not use or not have (depending on interpretation) the titles of Prince and Princess, nor the style Royal Highness. However, legally, per Letters patent issued in 1917 (and still remaining in force today) assign a princely status and the style of Royal Highness to all male-line grandchildren of a monarch, therefore, Louise is technically legally HRH Princess Louise of Wessex and James is HRH Prince James of Wessex.

The Circus Festival of Monte Carlo: A Brief History

It's that time of year again in Monaco: The time for Lions, Tigers, and Bears...Oh, My!...Nah, just the 2012 36th annual Circus Festival in Monaco.  It's typically the only time we see Princess Stephanie's three children attending a "Royal Duty". With that said, here is a breif history of the annual event.

The event was started in 1974 by then reigning Prince Rainier to celebrate his love for the circusamd order to support Circus arts and Circus families. The family-Prince Rainier's wife and three children all share his love for the circus. The first Festival was held from December 26 to 30, 1974 under the big top of the French circus Bouglione, installed on what was then the Esplanade de Fontvielle. In the foreword he wrote for the program, Prince Rainier said, "This International Circus Festival was created thinking of the circus community, of this family of underestimated people, so that you, attentive spectators of their efforts and of their work, could know them better, and celebrate them better." It was the first true circus festival ever presented in the Western world {Source}.

In 1975, the Festival was presented under the big top of the Italian circus, Nando, Liana e Rinaldo Orfei, and from 1975 to 1994, under the big top of another Italian Circus, Circo Americano-Togni. Since 1995, it has been held under a large, sedentary circus structure, permanently installed in what is now the Quartier Fontvielle, in Monaco {Source}.

Prince Rainier presided over the festival from it's inception in 1974 until his death in 2005. His daughter Princess Stephanie, took over the role after his death.

In the spirit of Prince Rainier's original thoughts upon creation of the original festival,  the Organization committee decided to create a new International Festival for Young Artists under the Presidency of H.S.H. Princess Stephanie of Monaco and with her older daughter Pauline Ducruet as President of the Jury. The Festival «New Generation» will be the one and only competition for Young Circus Artists which will be held in an original Circus ring. This festival will take place the weekend after the closing of the 36th annual festival, in the original circus ring, and will feature acts from Monaco, Germany, Denmark, China, Ukraine, Czech Republic, France, Italy and Switzerland ranging from Acrobats, rollerskaters, annimal acts, balancing acts, and jugglers-and a whole lot more! I'm sure it will be something to watch in the coming years!

Since the creation of the Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo, there have been numerous circus festivals created throughout the world including ones in: United States, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, France, Spain, China, Russia, Brazil, Hungary, and Mexico {Source} {Source}.

Check out the information on or order tickets to (and merchendise) the 36th Annual Festival and the 1st Annual The Festival «New Generation» at the website. The original festival runs from the 19-29 of January (Gala Awards Ceremony on January 24th) and the 1st Annual The Festival «New Generation» runs from 4-5 of February.

Royal Anniversaries: 2012

The year 2012 has MANY major events, many of which are royal-related. There are TWO major Jubilees in 2012: Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Margrethe II. Queen Elizabeth is celebrating 60 years on the throne and Queen Margrethe is celebrating 40 years as Ruler. There are also several major wedding anniversaries in 2012: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip are celebrating #65, and Queen Margarethe and Prince Henrik are
celebrating their 45th, and the Spanish King & Queen are celebrating their 50th.

Great Britain:

Of all of the Royals that are discussed here at The Royal Fanzine the British are probably the most well known. Many of our readers are probably well aware that Queen Elizabeth is celebrating her Diamond Jubilee this year (60 years) on 6 February (1952). Another known fact is that she and Prince Phillip are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary on 20 November (1947). In birthdays, it's the year Prince William (and his wife, The Duchess of Cambridge) turn 30 and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will be 65.

Denmark:

Celebrations have already begun for the lesser known major royal succession anniversary, Queen Margrethe II is celebrating 40 years as Queen of Denmark as of 14 January (1972). In addition to her succuession, the Queen of Denmark is also celebrating 45 years as a married woman in June.

Principality of Lichtenstein

Prince Hans-Adam II & Princess Marie are celebrating 45 years as a married couple in July 2012.
Morocco

King Mohammed VI & Princess Lalla Salma are celebrating their 10th anniversary in March. In the past decade the Royal Dou have two children: Crown Prince Moulay Hassan (born 8 May 2003) and Princess Lalla Khadija (born 28 February 2007).

Spain

While their daughter's marriages seem to be on the rocks (Infanta Elena has been divorced since 2009 and Infanta Cristina's husband has recently been banned from royal events due to his involvement with a scandal), the King & Queen of Spain have managed to keep it together for 50 years come Mid-May (14 May).
