Royal Profile: The Princess Fatma Neslişah, Imperial Princess of the Ottoman Empire and Princess of Egypt, (or Nazlishah in Arabic) Osmanoğlu Sultan

The Princess Fatma Neslişah, Imperial Princess of the Ottoman Empire and Princess of Egypt, (or Nazlishah in Arabic) Osmanoğlu Sultan was born 4 February 1921 the daughter of  HIH Prince Şehzade Omer Faruk Efendi  and his first wife and cousin  HIH Princess Rukiye Sabiha Sultan.

The Ottoman family left Istanbul, Turkey in 1924, and she grew up in Nice, France. She became an Egyptian Princess in 1940, upon her marriage to Prince Muhammad Abdel Moneim Beyefend. She served as the de facto First Lady for the Prince Regent. 

The Egyptian Revolutionary Command Council formally abolished the monarchy on 18 June 1953. In 1957, Prince Abdel Moneim and Princess Neslişah were arrested and accused of taking part in a plot against President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Again forced into exile, Princess Neslişah lived for a short while in Europe before returning to her native Turkey.


Prince Abdel Moneim died in 1979 in Istanbul, where Princess Neslişah continued to live with her unmarried daughter Iqbal. At the time of her death, Neslişah was the most senior Ottoman princess. After the recent deaths of Prince Burhaneddin Cem (2008) and Prince Ertuğrul Osman (2009), she was also the last surviving member of the Ottoman Dynasty to have been born during the Ottoman era.

She is survived by two children, a son and daughter, Prince Abbas Hilmi (1944) and HRH Princess HH Princess İkbal Hilmi Abdulmunim Hanımsultan (1945), as well as two grandchildren: HRH Princess HGlory Nabila Sabiha Fatima Hilmi Hanım (1974) and HRH Prince HGlory Nabil Daoud Abdelmoneim Hilmi Bey (1979). She was 91 years old at the time of her death.

Her funeral was held April 3rd. She reportedly died of a heart attack.
