Royal Profile: HRH Princess Elisabeth of Belgium

Princess Élisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène of Belgium was born via C-section the eldest child of Prince Phillippe, Duke of Brabant and Princess Mathilde, Duchess of Brabant on 25 October 2001. She has two younger brothers and a younger sister-Prince Emmanuel, Prince Gabriel & Princess Eléonore.

She was baptized on 9 December 2001, her godparents are her cousin, Prince Amedeo of Belgium, and her mother's younger sister Countess Hélène d'Udekem d'Acoz.

She is named for the following:
  • Elisabeth is for her great-great-grandmother Elisabeth of Bavaria.
  • Thérèse could be for her maternal great-great-grandmother Countess Teresa Sobanska.
  • Marie is for the Virgin Mary as per tradition with Catholic Royalty.
  • Hélène is for her maternal aunt and godmother Countess Hélène d'Udekem d'Acoz.
Ten years prior to her birth, a succession law was passed allowing females equal rights to the throne as their male counterparts. This means that once her father takes the throne, Princess Elisabeth will become the heir apparent. When this does happen, she will make Belgian history by becoming Belgium's 1st-ever Queen Regent.

Like her elder cousins, she was enrolled in Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege. Again, another historical moment: no future Belgian monarch's education has begun in Dutch. She also attends dance classes that are conducted in Dutch

She may only be eleven years old, but the young future monarch has already taken on several royal duties. In 2006, she attended the Te Deum in honor of Belgian National Day for the first time. In 2007, she attend the opening of a science Museum with her father, the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition  and a presentation of a model of the Belgian Antarctic Station which bears her name, The Princess Elisabeth Base. She is the paternal granddaughter of Christine-Alix de Massy and paternal great granddaughter of Princess Antoinette of Monaco, Barone de Massy. She has three  older sisters:
Because her father, she and her sisters *technically* lost their place in succession with the death of Prince Rainier in 2005, she and her family are known to keep out of the main limelight. Other than the occasional all family appearance, she's kept away from the media's glare. Because of her age, she did not attend Prince Albert's 2011 wedding with her parents and three older sisters.

She attends the private catholic school, L'Institut François d’Assise Nicolas Barré, along with her older sisters and second cousins once removed Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Camille Gottlieb. The youngest Knecht de Massy is presently in her second year at the nursey school division with her older sister Vittoria, while her other sisters and second cousins attend the upper division.

He was named:
  • Christian is after his great-great-grandfather, Christian X of Denmark, continuing the Danish royal tradition of the heir apparent being named either Christian or Frederick.
  • Valdemar is after Valdemar IV of Denmark. It is also a common royal name. The Prince's uncle Joachim has Waldemar as one of his names. The Prince's cousin Felix, Joachim's second son, has Valdemar as one of his names.
  • Henri is after his paternal grandfather, Prince Henrik, whose given name is Henri.
  • John is after his maternal grandfather, John Donaldson.
On 27 March 2007 Prince Christian started nursery school at Queen Louise's Children's House. Shortly prior to the birth of his youngest siblings, he began attending Garrison Parish Ward Kindergarten. In August 2011, he began his formal schooling at Trane Overgaard School. He may not be a Danish king yet, but he's already made Danish Royal history by being the 1st Danish heir apparent to attend nursery school AND the first Danish Royal to attend a state school. His elder cousins attend The Krebs School.

Although his mother claims that he does not know that he one day will be the Danish King, he has performed several royal duties. In 2006, he participated in his first official royal duty when he attended the opening of the new elephant house at the Copenhagen Zoo with his grandfather. In June 2010, he was a page boy at the wedding  of his godmother, Crown Princess Victoria. In November 2010, he accompanied his mother and grandfather to the unveiling of a painting of Prince Ulrik of Denmark at Rosenborg Castle. On 11 January 2012, he, along his grandmother, revealed a painting of his father, his grandmother and himself.
