Royal Profile: Emanuel Filiberto, Prince of Venice and Piedmont

Emanuele Filiberto, Prince of Venice and Piedmont was born 22 June 1972 in Geneva, Switzerland the only child of Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples & his wife Marina Doria.


He grew up mostly in Switzerland, dreaming about one day returning to Italy as its King. He was set to attend the Gamma Institute in Lausanne to study architecture, but his knack for finance led him to a career in International banking. During his international banking career, he was led to the US and Switzerland. He established the Altin Fund, and in 2001, he established the Prince of Venice Foundation. He left banking in 2002, and shortly thereafter left Switzerland.He also established the Emanuele Filiberto Charity Fund Foundation.

He began his television career in 1994 in Switzerland, working as a commentor on foreign soccer matches. He took a 15 year hiatus from television to work in banking. In 2009, he embarked on a new career: television personality. He appeared on the Italian version ofDancing with the Stars (aka Ballando con le Stelle) in 2009, and won! {Source}. He now spends the majority of his time trying to make it in the American market by working with American production companies.


He married a French actress, Clotilde Courau in Rome on 25 September 2003, Prince Albert of Monaco was his best man and had introduced the pair {Source}. They attended his 2011 wedding to former South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock. With his wife, they have two daughters:

  • Princess Vittoria of Savoy, born on 29 December 2003
  • Princess Luisa of Savoy, born on 16 August 2006
He and his wife also adopted two sons from Africa {Source}.
In January 2011, he was diagnosed with cancer {Source}, and after surgery, he was given a clear bill of health. However, in 2012, the cancer had returned, and again, the pretender to the Italian throne beat it {Source}
